What is the Difference Between an Esthetician and an Aesthetician in the Medical Industry?

Choosing the right career can be daunting. With so many options and confusing terms available, the decision becomes even tougher. The medical industry faces a similar dilemma when it comes to choosing a career between aestheticians and estheticians. They may sound similar with almost the same spelling, but they are quite different from each other. Let’s explore the differences between them in this article.

Who is an Esthetician?

Estheticians work like magicians for the skin. They typically work at the salon or spa to give treatments to the clients. They help to rejuvenate the skin texture, but without any surgical efforts. They can offer a complete guide to maintaining and caring for skin. They can work on the following:

  • Skin facials
  • Face and body wax
  • Makeup technique
  • Eyebrows
  • Massaging techniques

They have a good knowledge of the texture of the skin and can thus suggest non-medical products as per the needs of the client.

Who is an Aesthetician?

As an esthetician works on the skin to rejuvenate it, an aesthetician also works to revive the skin but follows a different procedure. Aestheticians, also known as medical estheticians, work as medical skin professionals who can treat skin-related problems as per medical terms. They work under a doctor and perform tasks related to cosmetic and facial aesthetics. As they have a medical degree, their working environment is a clinical setting. Due to their high knowledge of facial anatomy and training in the complex procedures of the cosmetic world, they can address serious concerns related to facial appearance. Take a look at the procedures they can be a part of:

  • Diagnose any skin problems.
  • Perform laser therapy.
  • They can give chemical peels for skin rejuvenation.
  • Administer lymphatic massage to help any patient recover from surgery.
  • Acne treatment
  • Scar removal, etc.

Similar to estheticians, their demands are also high. As it requires a professional medical degree, the level of training is also difficult. Many fail to finish the training, so it requires more determination and dedication.

Training and education requirements

Both responsibilities deal with issues related to skin, so both require a degree from an accredited cosmetic institute. It is also mandatory to undergo training for not less than 200 hours. The difference lies in the focus of aestheticians training on facial treatments like hair removal or laser therapy. They have advanced knowledge of facial anatomy. Aestheticians can also perform non-invasive anti-aging therapy and medical treatments for the skin.

Bottom line

As both careers are at their peak, you can choose to be either of them. With the proper training, you can start a salon or work at a salon after holding a degree as an esthetician. On the other hand, if you believe you can go further with your medical understanding of facial anatomy, being an aesthetician can be a good idea. Both options provide growth opportunities, thus gaining popularity in career choices.
